Her research interests center on music in media including radio, television, and film, and the culture of advertising.  She has presented her work at meetings of the Society of American Music, Royal Musical Association, the International Congress of Musicological Society of Japan, and the American Musicological Society.

Recently, she contributed a chapter, "From operatic pomp to a Benny Goodman stomp!":The National Biscuit Company and Let's Dance," to Music and the Broadcast Experience, an anthology edited by Christina Baade and James Deaville forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

At Utah State University, Rika teaches courses in music history, music theory, and world music to music majors and non-music majors in classroom, online, and broadcast settings.  She also loves working with international students and has developed and taught courses on elementary music theory, music appreciation, and film music for the Beijing campuses of SIE International Summer School, a U.S.-standard university-level summer school program in China.
